Nearly 900 students and their families attended a recent STEAM Night at Silver Mesa Elementary in Sandy, Utah, where members of the Telescope Array Project were there to help them learn about science and engineering. Julie Callahan, the Director of the project's outreach program, was there to help the attendees experiment with virtual reality, computer programming, 3D printing pens, and many other activities.
Students as young as kindergartners were able to experiment with the different equipment and learn how to create new objects out of memory wire, plastic pellets, and other interesting materials. Like STEM fairs, the night had a strong focus on teaching science and engineering principles, though the organizers have made an effort to incorporate arts into the events as well. The most recent STEAM Night is the third time that the school has held the annual event.
